Insider’s Look at Revenue Analytics

One of the companies recruiting at Davidson this year is a young & dynamic consulting firm named Revenue Analytics, which you may not have heard of… yet. Revenue Analytics, or RA, works with some of the world’s largest companies to help them solve their toughest challenges and grow their business. For an inside view, we turn to two Davidson grads, Addie Balenger (’15) & Gardner Rordam (’07):

Addie:

More than anything at Davidson, I learned to embrace complexity and distill a purpose in my daily work. At Revenue Analytics, I have discovered a company that pushes me to do both. The crux of RA’s work revolves around predicting supply and demand for many different businesses (don’t fret – non-Econ majors can still thrive at RA). Our teams design complex forecasting and optimization models for our clients to make better pricing and inventory decisions. Creating these solutions requires a unique combination of business strategy, data engineering, and statistical modeling. As I view it, we analyze and ultimately influence the axes on which the world’s largest companies turn.

RA also builds on my Davidson experience by equipping me with new technical skillsets. Because RA creates analytic technologies and new software systems, I must always keep learning.  My background in Economics and English coupled with co-workers who are software engineers, PhD statisticians, and industrial engineers makes for a dynamic team where we glean from each other’s expertise. Most importantly, my co-workers share an “intellectual curiosity” (as President Quillen would say) that I cultivated at Davidson, and that’s what makes me most excited for work every day. I view RA not as one stop within my career, but somewhere I can grow and thrive.

Gardner:

After Davidson, my career & life took a few unexpected turns. I couldn’t find (or define) what I was looking for after working at a huge company, with legal internships and in non-profits. Then, right around my law school graduation, I found an awesome company named Revenue Analytics. While on paper it didn’t make sense (Political Science/Law school background meets Econ, Statistics, & Data engineering), I felt a fit at RA similar to that feeling I got on my first visit to Davidson.

6 years later, I’m more inspired than ever to be here. I’ve watched the firm grow from 35 employees to over 100, and have been able to play in part in that growth and RA’s evolution. I’ve learned from an incredible array of colleagues, from new Strategy analysts to Operations Research PhDs to top tier executives. In those years, I’ve had a chance to partner with amazing clients at some of the largest companies in the world, working together with them to solve challenging problems and find new growth paths & strategies for their business. Just like my time at Davidson, I learn something new every day, collaborating with extraordinarily bright & inspiring co-workers to accomplish ambitious goals.

I’m truly excited for what the coming years will bring for RA and the impact we’ll be able to have on the lives of our employees and the growth of our clients.

Out 4 Undergrad: Queering Business, Technology, Engineering, and Marketing

Tai Tran ’18 is pursuing a Gender & Sexuality Studies major with a minor in Chinese Studies

Growing up, being queer was a hush-hush topic in many spaces I’ve been to. Being your authentic self meant being everything but out and proud. Whether it was middle school or the professional world, people just didn’t talk about it. Imagine my surprise when I heard of a professional conference opportunity specifically for queer undergraduate students. It’s not just one opportunity, but four. Out for Undergrad (O4U) offers four different conferences all in major cities around the United States: The Marketing conference is offered in Chicago, the Business conference is offered in New York, the Technology conference is offered in San Francisco, and the Engineering conference is offered in Palo Alto, CA. Did I mention that they cover your airfare and hotel?

I had first heard about O4U from Kai Jia, a Davidson alumnus who served as an ambassador for O4U. O4U is meant to help queer undergraduate students get their foot in the door of so many of these major career fields. The focus on academic and career development by fellow queer peers who volunteer their time to make this conference a success is the very meaning of community to me. The speakers, the volunteers, the staff at O4U really do want us to succeed and so planned for an entire year to put together all four of these conferences.

This year I chose to attend the O4U Marketing conference in Chicago, IL. The year before I attended the Technology conference in San Francisco. It was my first time in Chicago and I had a wonderful time. The itinerary was of course packed from 8 am in the morning to 7pm in the evening but the connections I made were worth all the while. Coming into the conference we were already given an assignment to provide hands-on experience in the field of marketing. The selected few participants with exceptional presentations had the chance to present their assignments to all of us. The winner got a position for a first round interview with a major company.

Each conference has their own career fair and so I was able to network with so many people from companies like Pepsico, Henkel, Neilson, Pandora, and even the toothpaste company Colgate. There were plenty of networking opportunities throughout the conference and I highly suggest everyone take advantage of it to get their name known. It’s only one weekend around mid-September or mid-October so take your pick and I hope you’ll have a great time connecting with professional queer peers as I did.

Up Close with Cigna’s Managed Care Rotational Program

Cigna’s Managed Care Rotational Program (MCRP) allows high-potential individuals to rotate throughout Cigna’s Medicare Advantage (MA) business in three rotations over the course of twelve months, getting exposure to the business model and senior leadership before placement in a permanent role.

When looking for a position post-Davidson, Cigna and the MCRP stood out to me for a few reasons. I was interested in the Healthcare industry, but was worried about getting lost in the shuffle of a large company. Cigna, though a large international presence, has a strong emphasis on personal and professional development. Further, the MCRP provides the opportunity and resources to focus on this development throughout the year-long program. For example, the Chicago-based MCRPs had regular lunches with the Chief Operating Officer of Illinois Medicare Advantage to discuss professional growth and learning opportunities.

Additionally, I did not want to immediately pin myself down to one area of the business; the MCRP is tailored to providing exposure to several critical departments in the company and finding what best suits your interests, skills, and areas for growth.

My experience in the program has been influential on my career path. I found my current role through projects I worked on in my last rotation and the managers and mentors I worked with have continued to be resources for advice and support post-program. I look forward to continuing to learn and develop professionally in my new position and am grateful for the opportunities and support the program has provided for me at Cigna.

Up Close with Synchrony Financial’s BLP

up close_Synchrony Financial's BLPDavidson grad Dan Hagemann ’15 recently completed his first year in Synchrony Financial’s Business Leadership Program. Synchrony Financial (SYF), completing the separation from GE Capital, created its Business Leadership Program (BLP) to begin developing future leaders of the company. Dan, now a full-time BLP, shares his experiences from the Program and answers some typical questions about SYF with you below:

“What is the Business Leadership Program, and why did you apply to it?” 

The Program is a 2-year program at Synchrony Financial consisting of three 8-month rotations. Each entry class of BLPs contains roughly 50 BLPs. When you enter the Program, you enter under one “track,” and each of your three rotations provides a different experience within that track. Nine different tracks are offered, ranging from HR to IT to Data Analytics. Mine is Credit, in which I’ve done rotations in Deal Underwriting and Credit Risk.

The rotational nature of the Program still to this day remains my biggest personal draw towards the Program. When preparing to graduate Davidson, I was interested in doing consulting, but I realized that the Business Leadership Program provided that same short-term assignment structure that I admired in a lot of consulting firms. Also, it was clear to me that Synchrony was very serious about investing in its Program participants and valued its employees, both large priorities for me.

“How did you get the job, or at least, what made you a good fit for Synchrony’s BLP?” 

As an Economics major at Davidson, I felt very confident about my quantitative and reasoning skills – I’d later realize that they weren’t all that special – which I figured would be important for a position in Credit. However, it became really clear to me throughout the interview process that Synchrony placed quite a bit of weight on leadership abilities and what SYF now calls “Critical Experiences,” and I was able to point out some examples of those abilities and experiences from my time at Davidson, whether related to Wrestling or studying in India and Spain.

“What have been the highlights of the Business Leadership Program so far?” 

We’ve had quite a year packed with several awesome experiences, but I’ll try to boil it down to three main points:

  •  Meeting our CEO Margaret Keane as the very first experience I had at Synchrony (9:00am, Monday morning – not kidding!). I’ve been lucky enough to speak with her a couple of times since then, but meeting our fearless leader will remain one of my favorite events that my class experienced.
  •  Traveling to different SYF sites across the country for three weeks as one of our signature Cross-Functional Experiences. We dedicated the three weeks to learning about Sales & Relationship Management, a function none of us work in currently. It brought my class a lot closer together, and we were able to present our findings directly to the CEO and her direct reports at their Management Committee meeting.
  •  Every year in July, the BLP Symposium provides a week-long opportunity for BLPs to reconnect at our headquarters in Stamford with various functions as an orientation for the new class. The improvements that we saw both in our fellow BLPs and Program growth overall in one year were astounding.

“What advice would you give to someone interested in applying to the Business Leadership Program?” 

So, my primary advice here applies to any job, not just the Program. Aside from the given of getting to know fellow alumni at the companies you’d like to work at, I think it’s essential that you ask smart questions and show a good knowledge of a company’s business model or nuances to demonstrate both ability and interest. A few really simple, informal test questions like, “How do we (SYF) make money?” can tell a lot about how interested a candidate is in the business, because the content is fundamental to every action we take as a company. Specific to the Program, carefully consider which track you want to be a part of and know how to demonstrate your leadership experience.

For a product-testing and certification company, Singapore is a great place to do business. The country itself is fixated  on quality and fervent in its desire to produce world class products, both of which lead to demanding regulations and a constant need for testing and certification. But opportunity also flows in from beyond the country’s compact borders. Singapore’s grade-A business infrastructure, and business-friendly rule of law make it a regional business hub for all of southeast Asia. Businesses in neighboring countries seeking to market products beyond their own borders naturally turn to Singapore for testing and certification services, making it a  truly ideal place for such a company like TÜV-SÜD to set up shop.

Huron Consulting Group: A New (to Davidson) Name in Consulting

Huron Consulting Group stands out as one of the fastest growing financial and operational consulting firms in the industry, serving clients in the healthcare, education, legal, life sciences, and business advisory sectors. The Davidson-Huron relationship began with the Healthcare practice in 2014-15 when we shared their summer internship opportunity. After a successful first run with Haley Rhodes ’16 during the summer of 2015, Huron Healthcare is back! This time, the practice is recruiting for their full-time Consulting Analyst positions.

In an effort to help Davison students get better acquainted with the practice, we connected with current recruiting coordinator, Megan Krizmanich. Megan began her career with Huron after graduating from The University of Notre Dame and served three years as a consultant before transitioning to her current role. Students will have the opportunity to meet Megan on-campus Monday, September 21 for an information session at 7:30pm in Alvarez 209. She will also be conducting one-on-one informational interviews on Tuesday, September 22 – limited space is available for these interviews.  The deadline for the full-time Huron Healthcare Consulting Analyst position is September 30.

We also reached out to Haley Rhodes ’16 to learn about her experience with the summer internship program. Haley, a graduating senior double majoring in Public Health and Hispanic Studies, spent some time speaking with CCD Employer Relations Ambassador, Chelsea Alexander ’18.

CCD: What drew you personally to the Healthcare Consulting role when you started at Huron? 

Megan Krizmanich: I started my undergraduate studies confident I was going to medical school, but I quickly changed my mind after standing in on my first surgery… I was still very passionate about the healthcare industry, but wanted to focus more on the business side.  Huron Healthcare fit the mold and after I met with people at the firm, I was sold!

 

CCD: How would you describe Huron’s work environment to someone who doesn’t know?

Haley Rhodes: A lot like Davidson culture. Collaborative. Immediately the team wanted me to succeed. They gave me a lot of responsibility from the first day and allowed me to do hospital unit observations on my own in the hospital once they knew I was comfortable. It gave me a lot of confidence. My teammates would say, “Come sit next to me, I’ll teach you how to do this analysis in Excel and whenever you have a question just ask.” I also had a development meeting every week with my supervisor where she would ask what I wanted to learn and what things I had done that I really enjoyed.

 

CCD: What did an average workday look like for you in the internship?

Haley: Monday and Thursday were travel days. I would wake up and go to the airport—a lot of the team traveling from Chicago would go on a plane together, then work out of the team room in our hotel. Then, we would do observations in the hospital and go on rounds or be in the team room doing projects, doing analyses or talking with our client counterparts. Other days, we would work at the hospital—leave from the hotel, go to the hospital, and work in the corporate room of the hospital and talk and lead trainings or conduct observations.

 

CCD: What is a common mistake you see candidates make during the application process?

Megan: Candidates tend to get caught up in selling themselves and can come across insincere.  Recognize that recruiting is a two way street; it is a chance for employers to learn more about your background, but at the same time it is a chance for you to learn more about companies and determine if it is a fit for you too.

 

CCD: Aside from academic experience, is there anything you particularly look for on a resume?  

Megan: Extracurricular; being involved at school, in your community, during the summer, etc.  A big challenge in consulting is time management.  If you are involved in extracurricular and successful in school, it clearly demonstrates that you already possess time management skills.

 

CCD: What advice would you give other Davidson students interested in applying to Huron?

Haley: I recommend reaching out to people at the firm to understand what it is like to be a consultant because the lifestyle is one to consider. I would also suggest practicing and honing organizational and quantitative skills, being comfortable with numbers and analysis, and taking initiative because I think doing that helped me to stand out.

Wilson Purcell ’15 had the great opportunity to intern with Coleman Research Group in Raleigh, NC.  The internship was shared by Ali Gores ’10.  Read on for an overview of Wilson’s experience.

Q: What originally drew your interest to this particular position?

A: I was drawn to the internship by the opportunity to speak with accomplished professionals from various backgrounds / industries. I figured that I would get to hear some interesting stories and learn about career paths that I wouldn’t have thought to research.

Q: How did the experience impact your career goals and your next steps?

A: This may not be the answer you’re looking for, but the experience didn’t really change my career goals all that much. I am still interested in finance and consulting work. Working at Coleman, though, showed me just how much working in an open and friendly office environment makes the work more enjoyable. If anything, working at Coleman shifted my focus in that I am now looking to work for smaller, more intimate companies.

Q: Can you share one brief story about a specific project, moment, etc. that was particularly impactful?

A: The executive officers of the company are mostly based in the New York office with one of them in London and two in Raleigh, but I got to meet each of them over the summer. They all met in Raleigh for a few days, and the CEO and founder Kevin Coleman came another time by himself. On his solo trip, he sat at the cubicle next to me to get some work done. He seemed busy, so I didn’t bother him. Once he had some free time, though, he introduced himself and talked to me for a bit. I thought it was really cool that he spent some of his limited time in the Raleigh getting to know the summer intern.

From Davidson to Deloitte through the Business Analyst Summer Scholar (BASS) program

Colleen Maher '14Recent Davidson grad Colleen Maher ‘14 had the opportunity to participate in the Deloitte Consulting Business Analyst Summer Scholar (BASS) program during the summer of 2013, which is the summer internship opportunity that Deloitte offers to rising seniors. Colleen is now a full-time Business Analyst with Deloitte Consulting, and she is here to share her BASS internship experience with you.

Can you tell us about your Davidson experience and how it led you to choose consulting?
At Davidson I was an Economics major, and I loved the liberal arts curriculum – I used to tell my 2nd Belk hallmates that I wanted to major in 101s! The diverse exposure to different topics was exactly why I was interested in pursuing consulting. I was involved in many programs at Davidson such as Honor Council, Warner Hall, and Building Tomorrow. I loved the varied opportunities to explore my evolving interests, which is something I found in Deloitte as well. As part of the Business Analyst (BA) rotational program we have the opportunity to participate in and lead firm extracurricular activities, similar to extracurriculars at Davidson. In addition to project work, these experiences allowed me to meet new practitioners and build a network in areas that interest me.

What is the Deloitte Business Analyst Summer Scholar (BASS) Program?
The BASS program is a 10-week summer internship that offers candidates the opportunity to be engaged on a real project experience, network with senior leadership, and learn about Deloitte’s culture and opportunities. BASS provides the opportunity to sharpen your analytical and business skills while working directly with clients. Summer Scholars have responsibilities that range from helping review client issues and interviewing key personnel to helping develop recommendations and preparing presentations. Moreover, participants attend a series of team-building events and office-wide meetings to hone teamwork and networking skills.

Can you tell us about your experience as a Summer Scholar?
Over the summer, I was engaged on an internal strategy project for Deloitte’s Office of Consulting. We were tasked to analyze global trends and anticipate their effect on Deloitte’s service areas to better inform senior leadership and drive firm investments. Throughout my project, I was given ownership of researching Nature and Resources trends, which included climate change and potential diversification of the energy mix. I participated in all components of the work – from the research stage to the data analysis and deliverable development. I had the opportunity to work with an amazing team who taught me everything from endless Excel shortcuts, to Edward Snowden’s geographic whereabouts, to how inadequate I am at trivia. We had great team lunches with “internet snacks” and dynamic conversations. I also had the opportunity to develop a strong intern network, and I still am very close with my intern class as we transition into full-time Business Analysts.

In addition to my project experience, I also had the opportunity to attend various training sessions and networking opportunities. For example, in the office on Fridays, we attended several lunches specifically designed for the intern class, where we would have a small lunch with senior practitioners and learn about their work at the firm. Other great experiences included our trips to Deloitte University (DU), which is a beautiful training facility outside of Dallas, TX devoted to developing and training Deloitte employees. We engaged in a project simulation and participated in training modules, all while enjoying some Texas sun and BBQ! During the summer, the firm also planned events for us including a Yankees Game and a comedy show in NYC.

What in particular led you to choose Deloitte?
I chose to pursue a career at Deloitte because of the opportunities for personal career development, excellent training experience, mentorship program, and the exposure to a diverse range of industries. At the end of the day, the people were really what sold me! All of the Deloitte practitioners whom I met through the recruiting process were incredibly helpful, engaging, and enjoyable. Moreover, the Davidson network at Deloitte is unparalleled, and I continue to be grateful for their support.

What advice would you give to applicants to the BASS Program?
Get to know Davidson alumni who are currently at Deloitte – we are on campus often and always excited to get to know new students. When prepping for interviews, practice cases with fellow applicants – you can gain a lot of perspective from giving a case interview to a friend. Learn to be comfortable sharing anecdotes about your previous leadership/internship experiences that can bring your resume to life, and familiarize yourself with past experiences that could be beneficial in behavioral interviews.
